American painter Granville Redmond (1871–1935) produced a body of work that captures California’s diverse topography, vegetation, and color. Representing both northern and southern parts of the state, his paintings range in style from contemplative, Tonalist works that evoke a quiet calm, to dramatic and colorful Impressionist scenes. Today, Redmond is widely considered one of California’s top early artists.
Granville Redmond: The Eloquent Palette, curated by Crocker Associate Director and Chief Curator Scott A. Shields, is the largest exhibition of the artist’s work ever assembled and the first in more than 30 years. Mr. Shields holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Kansas. He has 25 years of museum experience in the Midwest and California, has curated more than 75 exhibitions, and has been the primary or sole author of numerous exhibition catalogues, including Artists at Continent’s End: The Monterey Peninsula Art Colony, 1875–1907; Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey; A Touch of Blue: Landscapes by Gregory Kondos; Armin Hansen:The Artful Voyage; David Ligare: California Classicist; E. Charlton Fortune: The Colorful Spirit; and Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, 1942–1955.
